Tutoring a Baby to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The firm behind the advert claims that what appears like "luxury or oddity" is in fact "purposeful commitment in initial education".

"A household based in North London wants to find an extraordinary and experienced educator to guide their smallest child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might easily overlook the wording "initial stages" as mere a turn of phrase.

Yet, it could be the most significant element of this distinctive job advert, as it aims to hire a teacher for a one-year-old.

Hundreds of responses have since been received since the anonymous family posted their request for the highly paid tutor, who must be "someone very special".

During the past few weeks, the listing has attracted interest in the media, with many asking why?

Forward-Thinking Method

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their search, explained that in spite of first doubt, he found the idea "visionary", and "innovative".

When he met the family, he noted they understood the unusual character of their demand, and how young their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had postponed until their firstborn was five, and by that age "cultural conditioning had already become established".

What precisely did the family indicate by "cultural leaning"?

It's "comprehensive", he responded. "The manner you eat, the way you speak".

He explained the firstborn had adopted "extremely delicate, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family explained to Adam they hoped to prevent this pattern to repeat itself with their younger child.

The plan: To bring in a UK tutor, who needs to speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency claim the listing has sparked a broader discussion about how households perceive education, advantage and the part of cultural environment in development.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the development at the beginning here is rather osmotic," stated Adam.

It's via this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will adopt the English characteristics they aim to impart.

He said the tutor had to be somebody who went to "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor just has to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to him the successful candidate should ideally also have familiarity of or interest in riding, winter sports, the arts and instrumental training so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

Furthermore though, he stated the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and learning an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's perspective, assisting their son develop into a "English gentleman" will result in success and open doors.

"Considering the pros and cons of that, because it's definitely a status symbol," he notes.

However, in spite of all this tutelage in "Britishness", could the child adopt alleged cultural bias from the multicultural family he resides with anyway?

"Certainly", said the CEO. "The parents understand this might not succeed, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'we should try and let's go as quickly as we can', because the expense of it is irrelevant," he stated.

Overly Optimistic

Several in the private teaching field who have these doubts.

An education leader, CEO and founder of a tutoring service, who also offer private tutors, stated that "the development of embracing two identities, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be experienced personally, not manufactured."

He noted that he had moved from China to the Britain at the period of childhood, and had been brought up understanding and practicing both cultures. He went on to learn at the University of Cambridge.

Peter Cui portrait
Peter Cui was the first individual hailing from the People's Republic of China to be elected to the post of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The notion that an individual can function as a representation of UK identity, a person who can somehow transplant the attributes of a English gentleman to a infant child, seems to me optimistic and unrealistic," he stated.

"Based on my background, engaging a distinctly English tutor from early childhood will does not automatically produce the outcome they desire.

"I never had that kind of mentor, and nevertheless I have been privileged enough to live numerous of the situations they desire for their son."

He added: "The truth is, personal identity cannot be imposed from the outside influences; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."

Purchasing UK Culture

Of course, UK identity is something Adam thinks can be taught – and marketed.

"I think the reality that the global community regards us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
