The buzz about the recent awards show has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
